Vancouver Rent Bank celebrates one year anniversary

The Vancouver Rent Bank is celebrating its one year anniversary today.

In its first year, it has helped 220 people stay in their homes.

The rent bank provides small interest-free loans to people to are in danger of losing their accommodations because they can’t pay the rent.

In the year it’s been open, it has given out 137 loans worth a total of $125,000.

62-year-old Pat Tucker is on long term disability.

She was loaned one month’s rent for her West End apartment when she collapsed and was put into hospital.

Tucker still struggles, but says the rent bank saved her life.
