Edmonton Rush captain Jimmy Quinlan retires

EDMONTON – Edmonton Rush captain Jimmy Quinlan announced his retirement Friday, ending his career as the longest-serving player of the National Lacrosse League team.

Quinlan will remain on the Rush bench for the 2014 NLL season as an assistant coach in charge of the club’s defence. The Sherwood Park, Alta., native will replace Devan Wray, who leaves the team due to family commitments.

“Deciding to walk away from the game of lacrosse was not an easy choice, but the opportunity to move into a coaching role is something I have always wanted to do which makes the decision easier.” Quinlan said in a statement.

Quinlan joined the Rush for its inaugural season after one year with the Toronto Rock. He went on to become Edmonton’s captain for his final two years with the team.

He finishes as the second-leading scorer in team history with 219 points.
