Alberta Health Services to pay for additional cataract, corneal surgeries

CALGARY- Alberta Health Services will pay for another 1,400 cataract surgeries in the next four months and up to 120 extra corneal transplants, according to a news release issued this afternoon.

The surgeries, part of an ongoing effort to improve wait times, are in addition to 2,140 cataract surgeries announced in April.

The earlier surge, which reduced the number of service providers in Calgary to two from five, caused major confusion for clinics and patients after surgeries were delayed or temporarily cancelled.

Today’s announcement is asking for expressions of interest from cataract service providers within two weeks.

Once the contracts are awarded, the facilities performing the surgeries will be asked to complete the surgeries by the end of September.

The total cost of the additional cataract and corneal procedures is about $2 million.

More details to come.
