Multi-vehicle crash near Morinville sends 3 people to hospital

A multi-vehicle crash happened Thursday night at the intersection of Township Road 554/Cardiff Road near Morinville, Alta. – Jun 16, 2022

Seven vehicles were involved in a collision just south of Morinville Thursday evening, sending several people to hospital.

RCMP said officers responded at 5:15 p.m. to the intersection of Highway 2 and Township Road 554/Cardiff Road, which was about 12 kilometres north of St. Albert at the south edge of Morinville.

Emergency crews arrived to find several people from multiple vehicles injured and in need of help.

Three of those people were taken to hospital with various injuries. On Friday morning, police said one of them remains in hospital in serious but stable condition.

The intersection is controlled by lights.

Morinville RCMP said the investigation revealed several vehicles were stopped at a red light on Highway 2, when four of them were hit from behind by a southbound tow truck that was carrying two additional vehicles — an SUV on the flatbed and a truck being towed behind.

RCMP initially said Thursday they believed three vehicles were involved, but on Friday updated the number to seven.

Police said they continue to investigate the circumstances that led to this collision, however, on Friday said alcohol is not believed to be a factor.

The intersection was closed for several hours while police investigated. The scene is about 18 kilometres north of Edmonton.
