Devonian Gardens to get more funds

The city will allocate $14.5 million over the next two years to the second phase of the Devonian Gardens renovation, which will include most of the horticultural improvements.

The approval, which must go to council, means the second phase can be completed as a continuation of the first phase, avoiding the risk of rising costs or closure outlined in a report to the community and protective services committee.

Starting Phase 2 immediately after Phase 1 would add about $2.2 million to the budget, the report said.

The indoor park in the downtown Devonian Gardens is closed as it undergoes a $23.5-million facelift, its first since opening in 1977. The facelift is happening at the same time as redevelopment of The Core indoor mall.

The projects are scheduled to be completed in October.
