SASKATOON – Proposed changes to the city’s adult services bylaw are moving forward.

Saskatoon city councillors agreed on Monday to move the changes forward to the advertising stage and then on to a public hearing.

City administration is recommending limiting the venues to heavy industrial areas and enforcing a separation distance of 160 metres between establishments and residential homes, schools and parks.

Changes to the bylaws were necessitated after the province updated the provincial liquor regulations to allow striptease and wet clothing contests at adult-only establishments starting on Jan. 1, 2014.

Ward 2 Councillor Pat Lorje says the hearings are a chance for people to come forward with their opinions but there is little council can do.

“This is a problem that not a councillor or the mayor asked for, this was a change in legislation by the SLGA and I think it’s unfortunate,” said Lorje.

Once the public hearing is held, the bylaw changes will go back to council for final approval.

Also on Monday, council approved a request from administration to apply to the Provincial Disaster Assistance Program (PDAP) to have 11th Street East and Saskatchewan Drive East in Nutana declared eligible assistance areas.

Properties in the area have sustained damage due to the riverbank slope failure.

Under PDAP, residents would be able to apply for assistance for uninsurable essential property damage over $5,000.

Councillors also gave the nod to the communication plan for fall sweeping in 15 neighbourhoods with heavy foliage.
