Edmonton police believe speed and alcohol were factors in a collision that left one man dead early Thursday morning.
At about 2:30 a.m., police were called to the area of 32 Street and 28 Avenue in the Silver Berry neighbourhood after a vehicle crashed into an area home.
Police said a 2004 Porsche Cayenne was heading west on Silver Berry Road approaching 32 Street when it lost control, drove across the opposite lanes of traffic and struck the south curb.
The vehicle then travelled across the sidewalk and grass, and proceeded to hit a fire hydrant, trees, residential fence and the exterior wall of a house before coming to a stop.
The 31-year-old man driving the vehicle was taken to hospital by EMS where he died of his injuries, police said.
The eastbound and westbound lanes of Silver Berry Road were closed between 29 Street and 28A Avenue for several hours Thursday morning.
Police said there were individuals home at the time of the collision but they were not injured.
Crews at the scene cleaning up the aftermath said the vehicle hit the side of the house where the kitchen is located, and the stove went flying.
Some area residents who spoke with Global News said they are concerned about speeding along Silver Berry Road, and said motorists often drive too fast on the road all hours of the day.
Area Councillor Jo-Anne Wright lives nearby and said she heard the collision. She said the incident is traumatic for all of the residents, particularly the resident who has been displaced.
“I understand he is in a hotel right now and I’m sure will be feeling the effects of that trauma for a time to come,” she said.
“I do want to reach out to our transportation (department), to Edmonton police to see if there is something that they can help to assist with so that this doesn’t happen again. It’s nothing that any of these residents want to see going on.”
Police said the driver was the only person in the car at the time of the collision.
