Transit ridership numbers in Kelowna increased last year, but not as much as planners would have liked.
The number of people who used Kelowna Regional Transit in 2009-10 increased by more than 178,000 rides compared to the previous year.
Despite the large increase, passengers targets were not met.
“The ambitious ridership target set for 2009-10 was slightly more than what actual ridership numbers came in at,” says City of Kelowna Regional Programs Manager Jerry Dombowsky.
According to the latest figures from the Canadian Urban Transit Association (CUTA), bus ridership in Kelowna grew faster in 2007-08 than anywhere else in Canada.
CUTA’s analysis shows an 18% increase in 2007 and 13% in 2008. The national average increase for ridership was 3 and 5% respectively
The CUTA data also shows transit growth in Kelowna significantly outpaced similar sized cities across Canada, including Guelph,Ontario and St. John’s, Newfoundland.
