Nokia Lumia 1020 41 megapixel smartphone walks the walk in pictures

Good morning folks. Today I showed and talked about the newest Nokia Lumia 1020 smartphone with Herculean photography feats from its 41 megapixel sensor.

It runs on Windows Phone 8 as do its previous Lumia siblings and features a 4.5″ AMOLED WXGA (1280×768), tapered edge (very cool. Got to touch it) Corning Gorilla Glass 3, PureMotion HD+, ClearBlack, high brightness mode, sunlight readability, super sensitive touch, Nokia Glance Screen.

If that is a mouthful it’s because nothing but the best glass technology has gone into this camera phone.

The 1020 is Nokia’s second gen 41 MP camera phone, the previous model running on Nokia’s older OS. Now it’s easier to use with fewer choices, but the ones that bring out the best in picture taking quality. The smartphone runs as expected in all things Windows Phone 8, but I would like to concentrate on its amazing photography.

Why?

Because when comparing apples to apples, it truly takes better looking pictures, than several of the mirrorless cameras I compared it to. This includes Samsung NX, Fujifilm X-M1 and any Canon Rebel DSLR.

How can that be?

It’s a combination of its much larger 41 MP Nokia Pro Camera – Pureview Sensor with Carl Zeiss  with optical image stabilization and processing technology that brings out the best in class image. There is a price to pay for this…it takes several seconds, before you can take the next picture, so don’t expect the 10 FPS sequential photography of the iPhone 5S or 13 megapixel sports shooting of the Samsung S4 or LG G2.

Set your “frame” of mind to one picture at a time, like the Ansel Adams photography days gone by with amazing detailed pictures from a smaller than pocket camera device. It can truly replace any camera for just shooting things around you.

To be clear. Apples to apples is shooting a wide angle photo of any scene, day or night with the Nokia 1020 against the above cameras, even without flash. Its files are twice the physical size of the above cameras.

But it can’t keep up with these bigger cameras’ optical zoom range, slowly coming down in quality but still looking better at 2.5X zoom (compared to the 3 to 4 X zoom of digital cameras) and can go to 4X zoom, easily beating out any smartphone around, except the Galaxy Zoom smartphone in a class of its own but much thicker with a smaller screen. It actually produces a 38 MP images along with a scaled down 5MP image for sharing wirelessly through the phone and can be set to shoot only 5 MP images, unfortunately with the same write time between shots.

The 1020 does not have as many settings as other camera phones. It will take multiple bracketed exposures, features a delayed shutter option, so you can make sure the camera is steady after you press the shutter button. You can manually quickly change settings like flash, shutter and – + exposure. Its 1080p/30fps, 25fps, 24fps produces very smooth videos, especially when you are panning or your subject is shaky.
