TORONTO – Miley Cyrus wasted no time making fun of her controversial MTV Video Music Awards performance on Saturday Night Live.

The opening sketch, set in the year 2045, featured two homeless people discussing “the destruction of America.”

Kenan Thompson’s character recalled how Cyrus’ VMAs performance was on “the exact day America ended.”

In flashbacks, Cyrus told a stagehand she didn’t need to warm up because “I think this performance is going to be less about the singing.”

She then received a visit from an earlier version of herself, played by Vanessa Bayer, who warned her about performing with Robin Thicke. (“You ready to start grabbing at my junk while I half-sing?,” said Thicke, played by Taran Killam.)

Younger Cyrus asked Cyrus why she keeps sticking her tongue out. “I’m having tiny strokes,” she explained.

The sketch ended with Thompson’s character pointing out that although the performance brought about the end of America, its northern neighbour didn’t fare as badly.

“Canada did great,” he said. “Turns out that prime minister Bieber was a fair and generous leader.”

Cyrus hosted and performed on SNL just days after a set of racy photos appeared online and she dismissed criticism and advice from Sinead O’Connor. On Saturday, Annie Lennox weighed in with her own public message.
