TORONTO — Former Eurythmics singer Annie Lennox isn’t impressed by some of today’s female pop stars.

Lennox posted a message on her Facebook page Saturday saying she is “disturbed and dismayed by the recent spate of overtly sexualised performances and videos.”

The 58-year-old “Sweet Dreams” star did not name Miley Cyrus, Rihanna or any other singer.

“You know the ones I’m talking about,” she wrote.

Lennox said certain record companies are putting out pornography.

Breaking news from Canada and around the world sent to your email, as it happens.

“I believe in freedom of speech and expression, but the market forces don’t give a toss about the notion of boundaries. As long as there’s booty to make money out of, it will be bought and sold,” she wrote.

“It’s depressing to see how these performers are so eager to push this new level of low. Their assumption seems to be that misogyny — utilised and displayed through oneself is totally fine, as long as you are the one creating it.”

Lennox added: “As if it’s all justified by how many millions of dollars and U tube hits you get from behaving like pimp and prostitute at the same time. It’s a glorified and monetized form of self harm.”

The comments come only two days after a set of photographs appeared online showing Cyrus, 20, baring almost all and a few days after Rihanna released an explicit video for her single “Pour It Up.”

Singers like Cyndi Lauper and Sinead O’Connor have publicly condemned Cyrus for her racy performances.

Lennox has won four Grammys, an Oscar, a Golden Globe and several Brit Awards both while half of the Eurythmics (with Dave Stewart) and as a solo artist.
