Second generation Windows 8.1 computers

Today I talked about how much better the second generation of Windows 8.1 computers will be. I just got back from Dell’s New York launch showing their Windows 8.1 devices last Wednesday in New York.

What can consumers look forward to this fall?

More powerful notebooks, hybrid notebooks, better competitive prices and cheaper Android tablets.

Sam Burd, VP Dell Personal Computer Group, stressed the need for today’s new portable computing to meet the high demands the Millennial generation.

“Two thirds of Millennials expect to have the same device at work and at home,” said Burd. “They are our toughest customers who don’t rely on product marketing and will make their own buying decisions.”

Many of these devices use Intel 4th Generation Processors and Graphics technology for smaller, lighter, sharper, more powerful and longer battery life form factors. They range from an 8-inch Intel Atom-based full Windows 8.1 tablet to Intel Quad processing in a 15-inch XPS 15 notebook with amazing HD+ display.

Recently privatized, Dell hit the ground running with smart designs and competitive prices.

All devices will be pre-loaded with Dell’s cross platform Dell Wyse PocketCloud backup and share service on a single pane secure management of all one’s devices.

I tried all devices after the launch and here are my first impressions with more to come as the products roll out.

The new Dell XPS 11 notebook pivots its quad HD screen 360 degrees to become a tablet. supplied

• Venue 7: $149.99 CDN: Priced right with bright easy-viewing screens but will
have to slug it out with feature-rich ASUS MeMO Pad.
• Venue 8: $179.99 CDN: Nicely packaged, solid long lasting with bright display.
• Venue 8 Pro: $299.99 CDN: Small, thin, solidly built running full Windows 8 in a
super portable package.
• Venue 11 Pro: $549.99 CDN: Love this one, biggest bang for your buck, like
others based on the new Windows 8.1. Competes with Microsoft Surface Pro but
with streamline looks, replaceable battery, Full HD IPS, stylus options, thinner
real-feel magnetically attached keyboard and folding stand.
• New XPS 15: $1,499.99 CDN: With up to Quad Intel 4th Gen i7, NVIDIA GPU,
stunning HD+ 3,200×1,800 screen with Sharp’s power saving IGZO technology,
outpaces everyone including the current MacBook Pro 15-inch Retina display
• XPS 11: $999.99 CDN: Nice idea to have QUAD HD screen pivot backwards 360
degrees to slate form. Thin and light but the touch keyboard disappoints requiring
harder finger pressure to work. Perhaps the shipping product will be better. Stay
tuned.
• New XPS 13: $999.99 CDN: Good from the get-go. Solid, small footprint for a 13-
inch screen, 4th Gen Intel CPU and GPU…nice package
