Teacher dead after vehicle collides with school bus in Wellington County

A teacher is dead after an SUV and a school bus collided Wednesday afternoon in Wellington County

Ontario Provincial Police say they were called to the intersection of Fourteenth Line and Sideroad 21, east of the village of Alma at about 3:30 p.m.

Authorities say a school bus carrying 12 students had collided with an SUV with a single occupant.

The driver of the SUV was pronounced dead at the scene. No one on the school bus suffered serious injuries.

The Upper Grand District School Board announced on Thursday that the victim is a teacher at Alma Public School.

“This is a terrible situation and our thoughts are with the teacher’s family and loved ones, students, and the entire Alma Public School community. We will do whatever we can to support the family, students and staff,” Director of Education Peter Sovran said.

Eleven students from Alma Public School and one student from Elora Public School were on the bus, a board spokesperson said.

Alma Public School was open on Thursday and the board said it sent its crisis response team and trauma support staff to provide additional support for everyone at the school.

Wellington County OPP is asking anyone who may have seen the collision to please contact them.
