Five veterans go on a trip of a lifetime through Western Canada

Five veterans from Canada, United States, Australia and the United Kingdom embarked on a trip of a lifetime through BC and the Canadian Rockies as part of the Train for Heroes project.

The inaugural program — run by of Rocky Mountaineer — recognizes and honours individuals and organizations that have made a significant impact on the lives of others.

“It’s meant to really celebrate and solute those heroes who make a difference in our world,” says Randy Powell with Rocky Mountaineer. “We are doing it through a partnership with a number of organizations that care for and help wounded soldiers from around the world.”

John Lowe served overseas as a platoon signaler and was part of a first-response team.

“It is a little overwhelming, but it is exciting to be here. We are going to go for a few days through the Rockies,” says Lowe. “I definitely drove through there a few times. I was stationed in Edmonton, and I’d always come home for Christmas, but never spent time just enjoying it.”

The train will make an overnight stop in Kamloops, and the journey will end in Lake Louise on Thursday.
