Saskatoon Health Region lifts emergency response system

Saskatoon Health Region ends emergency response system after high patient numbers let up at local hospitals. File / Global News

SASKATOON – Despite a busy weekend in Saskatoon Hospitals, the health region has ended its emergency response put in place to deal with a record number of patients.

Patient flow came to a standstill last week causing a severe backlog in emergency departments in Saskatoon.

It wasn’t a case of more admissions, according to health officials, but of more people staying in hospital longer.

This was blamed on a lack of services for the aging population who need appropriate long-term care homes.

But the Saskatoon Health Region (SHR) says it’s now been able to discharge a significant number of people putting everything back to normal.

“Things have settled down a bit certainly the system is still busy and over the weekend we found St. Paul’s hospital was particularly busy but I think things are much better than they were last week,” said Maura Davies, Saskatoon Health Region CEO.

Davies says there’s no easy fix but work on more long-term solutions is underway.
