Durham Regional Police say a worker is dead following a workplace incident involving a piece of machinery on Wednesday in Oshawa.
Police said the incident occurred at around 8:45 a.m. at a worksite on Waverly Road, near Adelaide Avenue and Stevenson Road.
Investigators said the worker was initially vital signs absent but later died.
The city of Oshawa confirms it was a contract worker for the city. A crew was hired last week to help with the removal of several emerald ash trees in Oshawa. Director of Operations, Mike Saulnier says it was a shock to the entire department.
“They are an extended part of the family,” says Saulnier. “When something like this happens. Our heart felt condolences go out to the family in this tragic time,” he says.
They would not confirm the worker’s age or gender, but Saulnier says it’s hard no matter how old they were.
“I know the person was younger in nature. But regardless, it doesn’t matter what age you are. There’s no such place for this to happen, and that’s what is hard to digest,” he says.
The Ministry of Labour has been called in to investigate and the Durham Police Forensics unit is also looking into the death.
