Shuffle avoids school closures in north Calgary

The Calgary Board of Education is set to shuffle students at two north Calgary schools this fall, avoiding further school closures by removing some children from each facility.

Trustees voted Tuesday to relocate kindergarten to Grade 3 students enrolled in the Traditional Learning Centre at Highwood School to Dr. J.K. Mulloy School starting in September.

The TLC program in northwest Calgary, an academically challenging program with school uniforms, is set to expand to include Grade 4 next fall.

Without a change, classrooms at Highwood School would be at capacity next year and expected to be overflowing the following year since the school also offers a thriving French immersion program.

Moving TLC students out of Highwood School will allow enrolments at both alternative programs to grow.

The change will also mean Dr. J.K. Mulloy School can remain open.

Earlier this month, trustees approved the staged closure of the school’s regular program due to declining enrolments in the community.

A similar proposal was also approved for Chris Akkerman School in the northeast, which will see its kindergarten to Grade 6 regular program students moved to nearby Marlborough School.

The student swap is set to take place this fall and will allow Chris Akkerman to remain open for its expanding Traditional Learning Centre program.

It will also bolster the regular program at Marlborough School, which has seen declining enrolments, and will lose more students when a new school opens in Saddle Ridge.
