Sask. harvest progressing despite recent precipitation

SASKATOON – The Ministry of Agriculture says the 2013 harvest is progressing well despite recent rains in many areas of Saskatchewan.

As of Monday, farmers had 71 per cent of crops combined. The five-year average for this time of year is 60 per cent.

Rainfall ranged throughout the province from zero to 61 millimetres, according to the weekly crop report.

Harvest progress is most advanced in the west-central region with 86 per cent combined while only 60 per cent is done in east-central.

According to the ministry, average to above-average yields have been harvested so far in most areas of the province.

Light frost was also reported throughout the province; however, damage is expected to be minimal.
