Watch: Police issue warning after bear caught snacking on apples in West Vancouver yard

A West Vancouver homeowner got an up-close-and-personal look at a black bear having a fruit snack a few days ago, but police are now issuing a warning to homeowners about leaving attractants in their yard.

West Vancouver Police say all residents should check their homes for any attractant, as the bears are currently in their annual stage called hyperphagia where they need to eat large amounts of food to prepare for hibernation.

During this incident the BC Conservation Service were called, but could not attend as officers were dealing with a more aggressive bear in the Lower Mainland. The bear eventually left the area on his own.

On the recommendation of police, the family has removed all remaining fruit and is considering landscaping changes to further ensure no bear attractants remain in their yard.
