CALGARY – Calgary’s police chief is here to stay – at least for a few more years.
Chief Rick Hanson has agreed to extend his contract, which was set to expire in 2015. He will now keep his post until at least 2018.
“I said it when i came six years ago and I will say it again. You can only function in this role when you have support of the commission, the mayor and council and the members of the service, so that’s all I will say right now,” said Hanson. “As we move forward, I am very appreciative of that support.”

Commission chair Mike Shaik says the extension is well-deserved.
“We have been able to reduce crime by 35 per cent, we have a citizen satisfaction ratio of 96 per cent based on 2012 numbers,” he said. “We believe that this is the leadership we want to have continue.”
Hanson has served as police chief since 2007.
