Ontario housing co-ops get more options to resolve tenant disputes

TORONTO – Ontario’s non-profit housing co-operatives will soon have other options to resolve tenant disputes.

A bill that would allow co-ops to apply to the Landlord and Tenant Board to evict tenants passed Tuesday in the legislature with the support of all three parties.

They’ll also have access to mediation services to resolve disputes.

The Liberals say co-ops currently have to go through the courts to evict tenants, which can be time-consuming and costly.

Municipal Affairs and Housing Minister Linda Jeffrey says they’ll now have an easier and less expensive way to end disputes.

They include issues like persistent late payments, illegal behaviour and intentional damage to property.
