It was a disappointing night for parents at Ken Jenkins School yesterday.
The Regina Public School Board voted unanimously to close the school in North-West Regina in June. Sixty-one students currently attend the school, and early projections for 2014 show only 17 students will be enrolled.
Included in the decision was the condition of the building. There would need to be a significant amount of investment into the building in order to keep the school up and running. The school board does not feel putting that much money into it could be justified.
Barbara Young, the chair of the Regina Public school board, said that while the decision was necessary, it was not an easy one.
“It’s never easy to close a school,” Young said. “People might have to leave a school where they might have had very good experiences. It means parents may have to do things a little differently for transportation and students have to make new friends.”
Parents have the option of sending their children to either Elsie Mironuck or Ruth M. Buck next year.
