PRINCE ALBERT, Sask. – A 16-year-old boy has died in a Saskatchewan hospital after being found in medical distress while being held in custody.
Janice Wilby, spokeswoman for the Ministry of Corrections and Policing, says staff at Prince Albert Youth Residence saw the youth was in medical distress on Wednesday and immediately took him to hospital.
He died in hospital at 1:15 p.m. Thursday.
The boy had been scheduled to appear in court on Friday for three charges of assault and one charge of assault on a probation officer.
The facility has a capacity of 26 and currently has 14 youths in open custody and eight in remand.
The boy who died had been admitted only a day or so before he died.
