Canadian Pacific to close locomotive centre

CALGARY – Canadian Pacific Railway says it will eliminate 130 jobs in the coming months after giving notice that it will close its locomotive repair and maintenance centre at Calgary’s Alyth Yard.

The work of the Locomotive Reliability Centre will be transferred to other CP maintenance facilities, the railway said Thursday.

Canadian Pacific said the decision follows the Canadian Transportation Agency’s order to cease load testing and idling in overnight operations at the 60-year-old facility.

Canadian Pacific (TSX:CP) says the regulator’s move failed to recognize the around-the-clock operational requirements of the facility and restricts its ability to provide customer service.

Despite the closure, Alyth Yard will remain an important CP rail yard offering non-stop railway activities, the company said.
