SASKATOON – Red light cameras are being installed at another location in Saskatoon.

Over the next few weeks, crews will be installing the cameras at Idylwyld Drive and 33rd Street.

“Drivers who run red lights at signalized intersections run the risk of causing collisions especially right- angle and left turn opposite collisions which are often more severe and can result in serious injury or death,” says Transportation Manager Angela Gardiner.

Once the new cameras are installed, a one-month grace period will be given to the registered owner of a vehicle caught on film before tickets are handed out.

Violations are issued once the video has been reviewed by Saskatoon police officers.

“The red light camera program has helped to reduce the number of severe collisions and fatalities at the locations where the cameras are installed,” says Gardiner.

“A recent review of the red light camera program shows an average of 15 per cent reduction in injury and fatality rate at red light camera locations.”

At the same time, crews will be replacing the cameras at the other red light locations in the city: Avenue C and Circle Drive, Warman Road and 51st Street and Preston Avenue and 8th Street East.
