UPDATE: Police probe 4 early morning smash and grabs

CALGARY – Police are investigating four separate cases of smash and grab robberies that happened early Monday morning.

In one robbery, a truck crashed into a pawnshop on Macleod Trail at 39th Avenue S.W. around 5 a.m.

The truck was left behind at Rocky Mountain Pawnbroker, while the suspects made off in a different vehicle.

Police believe as many as four people were involved, including a woman, and are reviewing video surveillance from the store for more information. The shop owner says the break-in was senseless.

“Nothing was taken, like, nothing, not even a 95 cent DVD,” says John Sanford. “Basically, they did about $25,000 worth of damage and got nothing.”

The shop has firearms, but they are kept locked up. Investigators say the suspects appear to have tried unsuccessfully to steal jewelry from the store.

“Everything of value is locked up at night and there’s no cash on site…so there’s nothing liquid you can grab,” Sanford explains.

Meanwhile, officers are also investigating after someone smashed the window at Holt Renfrew on Stephen Avenue around 4:30 a.m., taking two Louis Vuitton handbags.

Police believe two suspects were involved, and may have left the scene in a Ford Mustang.

A window was smashed at a WIND Mobile phone shop in the 200 block of 10th Street N.W., but police aren’t sure what, if anything, was taken. They’re also looking into a smash and grab at a Telus store on Bow Trail.

All four of the incidents happened between 4:30 a.m. and 5:40 a.m., but police say it’s too early to know if the incidents are related.

“As far as we can tell they were random in nature,” explains Acting Duty Inspector Leah Barber. “We haven’t linked them together yet.”

Despite the damage, all four businesses opened to customers on Monday morning.
