New school zone initiative set for launch

SASKATOON – Students making it to and from school safely are a top priority for schools, parents and law enforcement.

‘A Safer You, A Safer Me’ is an initiative Cst. Corridawne Mackenzie and Cst. Erica Weber with the Saskatoon Police Service started in the spring with both school divisions in Saskatoon.

“We’ve had kids who have been hurt in school zones and we have kids that are at risk every day of something happening on their way to or from school,” said Weber.

Breaking news from Canada and around the world sent to your email, as it happens.

Between 2009 and 2012 there were eight pedestrian collisions in Saskatoon school zones.

School resource officers will launch the program Tuesday at Lakeview School, stopping drivers who commit school zone infractions and giving them warning post cards.

“Simply to educate them, remind them really bring to the forefront of their minds that you’re in a school zone. We want to keep our kids safe. The next week we’ll be doing enforcement and we’ll have no mercy, it will be tickets for offences committed in school zones,” said Mackenzie.

The initiative is the result of a high number of complaints.

It will be at St. Michael School on Wednesday with a plan of initiating the program at 10 schools this year.

Speeding in a school zone can result in a fine of at least $140 and 3 demerit points.

Along with the initiative starting Tuesday, a back-to-school blitz focusing on school zone safety will be taking place across the province.
