SASKATOON – Saskatchewan classrooms are full once again with somewhat eager-minds and law enforcement are getting ready to participate in a two-day long blitz focusing on school zone traffic safety.

Operation Student Safety will take place on Tuesday and Wednesday across the province.

Police will be focusing on school zones speeders, motorists obeying signs, vehicles yielding to pedestrians and those failing to follow school bus signs.

“Slow down in school zones. Not only is it the law, but reducing your speed gives you more time to react to hazards on the road, like a child darting out in front of you.”

“Stay alert and drive with care, because you don’t need the injury of a child on your conscience,” said Andrew Cartmell, president and CEO of SGI.

According to preliminary 2012 numbers, SGI says there were 11 collision-related injuries in the province’s school zones.

A ticket for speeding in school zones includes a fine starting at $140 and three demerit points.

A Selective Traffic Enforcement Program (STEP) will take place at the same time in Corman Park communities like Martensville and Warman.

STEP is an SGI-sponsored, multi-department safety enforcement event which will be held in conjunction with the traffic blitz.

Last September’s Operation Student Safety resulted in 345 tickets, including 293 for speeding in school zones.
