EDMONTON – A five-year-old girl who died after a snowmobile crashed into a tree in Strathcona County has been identified as Taeya Maron, who lived near the accident scene.
RCMP say the girl and her 36-year-old father were riding the snowmobile in a wooded area in the Brookville Estates subdivision in east central Strathcona County just after 5 p.m. Sunday when the girl’s dad lost control of the machine.
Both the girl and her father were thrown from the snowmobile into a stand of trees. Neither was wearing a helmet, police said.
The girl was pronounced dead at the scene. Her father was taken to an Edmonton-area hospital with serious injuries, but is expected to recover, said RCMP Const. Wally Henry.
“We’re trying to piece together exactly what happened,” Henry said Sunday night. “There’s so many variables that could have come into play.”
The investigation is ongoing, but investigators have ruled out alcohol as a possible factor.
Henry said there are snowmobile and ATV trails throughout Brookville Estates, a rural acreage subdivision east of Highway 830.
