The fatal stabbing of a woman in the middle of a central Montreal street on Tuesday afternoon was a case of domestic violence, Montreal police said Wednesday.
Francois Pelletier was charged with first-degree murder on Wednesday in the killing of Romane Bonnier, 24.
Pelletier, 36, appeared briefly via video conference and is scheduled to return to court on Nov. 25.
Police have said the incident took place in the context of domestic violence and that the pair had previously lived together.

Const. Veronique Dubuc says police received numerous 911 calls just after 4:30 p.m. Tuesday for an altercation between a man and a woman.
Bonnier was stabbed several times in the upper body and taken to hospital in critical condition before her death was confirmed in the evening.
Pelletier was arrested at the scene in the city’s Plateau-Mont-Royal borough, a few blocks east of McGill University’s downtown campus.
Quebec has experienced a spate of femicides since the beginning of 2021, with an unofficial count putting the number at 17.
