WINNIPEG – A man was injured in a fire at an industrial building near Empress Street and Sargent Avenue on Friday morning.

The fire caused the partial collapse of sign company Metal Etch Graphics at 1143 Sanford St.

The business owner suffered burns to his legs and smoke inhalation and was taken to Health Sciences Centre, a friend of the man said.

It was a difficult blaze to fight because of concerns about what was in the building, the platoon chief at the scene said. The single-storey structure houses several businesses, including a welding company.

Smoke billowed up from the building just south of Westview Park, better known as Garbage Hill.

The fire was under control by 10 a.m., but firefighters planned to stay all day to make sure it was completely out, they said.

An earlier report from the Winnipeg fire department said the blaze was burning across the street at 1150 Sanford, which houses a door manufacturer.
