Montreal cyclist killed after head-on collision with taxi

MONTREAL – A cyclist was killed in a head-on collision with a taxi in downtown Montreal in the early hours of Thursday morning.

Paramedics attempted to treat the 31-year-old man, but he was pronounced dead at the scene. 

The taxi driver, a man in his 60s, was transported to hospital to be treated for shock.

The incident occurred at around 1 a.m. along Rene Levesque Boulevard near Peel Street.

The intersection was closed for several hours as investigators and collision reconstruction experts reviewed the scene to better understand what took place.

Police spokesperson Constable Dany Richer later confirmed that the cyclist seems to have made a U-turn against the flow of traffic, when he was hit by the car.

He was not wearing a safety helmet.

This was the 16th deadly collision in Montreal in 2013, and the 5th cycling fatality.
