Police received several 911 calls at around 5 p.m. reporting that a motorist had struck several people in the parking lot on Sunshine Street, near Cadman Street.

When officers arrived at the scene, they located three men, three women and a four-year-old child with injuries. Police had previously said five people were injured in the crash.

All seven were taken to hospital to be treated for non-life-threatening injuries.

Montreal police spokesperson Caroline Chèvrefils said it appears the driver, a 51-year-old woman, lost control of her vehicle as she was making a turn in the parking lot.

The vehicle then struck the group of seven who were waiting by the doors of the polling station.

Chèvrefils said that while the collision is considered “accidental in nature,” the driver is being detained for the investigation.

Several emergency vehicles were dispatched to the scene.

Susan Sepentgis, who was nearby, rushed to see what was happening.

“I saw the cop cars coming by and the ambulances so I came to see what was going on,” she said.  “By the time I got here they were taking care of all the injured people. There were seven injured. They all looked pretty hurt.”

Sepentgis said she was shaken by what she saw.

“I was devastated,” she said. “Very upsetting. Very very upsetting.”

The polling station, according to Chèvrefils, remains open despite the incident.

However, a portion of Sunshine Street remains closed as collision experts investigate.
