Stretch of Kananaskis highway reopens after flood

CALGARY – A 22 kilometer stretch of highway in Kananaskis Country closed by flooding in June is now up and running.

Highway 40 was closed for repairs between the Peter Lougheed Park winter gates (Highway 68) and Lost Lemon Lookout.

June flooding caused damage to the highway as torrents of water and debris scraped the roadway and tore across embankments, plugging culverts and ditches.

Repairs included clearing out all of the debris, and fixing and re-grading the damaged sections of the highway.

Highway 40 had been closed from Highway 1 to Highway 541 but sections up to the Peter Lougheed Provincial Park winter gates (Highway 68) are now open.

Fixing this section of the highway means nearly 72 kms of the road will now be open from Highway 1 to the summit at Lost Lemon Lookout.

The remaining 33 kms of road from the summit to Highway 541 is closed pending repairs, with damage to creek crossings and roadways needing significant work.

It is anticipated this section will re-open next year
