As Vancouver police kicked off their enforcement campaign for school zone driving safety this morning, an impaired driver was caught a few blocks away from an elementary school on the first day of classes.
Just after eight o’clock this morning – as most parents were taking their children to school – the impaired driver was caught near Renfrew Elementary at East 22nd Avenue and Rupert Street.
VPD Constable Brian Motangue told Global News the driver was given a 24-hour suspension and their car was towed.

No criminal charges have been laid.
“This is not something that we would see often at 8:00 in the morning, but it does happen,” said Montague in an email. “What is extra concerning is all of the kids that were on the road at that time heading back for the first day of school.”
The VPD campaign will run until September 13, and will focus on enforcement and education for drivers in school zones around the city.
The posted speed limit in school zones is 30 km/h from 8 am to 5 pm.
The fine for speeding is $196, and if you go 20 km/h above speed limit, it jumps to $253.
VPD also wants drivers to remember school zones are not just the areas marked with house-shape signs, but are where children walk the route to school and back.
