Plus size fashion trends for fall 2013

With the weather cooling down women are flocking to their favourite retail stores to get ready for the long and cold winter ahead.  When it comes to fashion my favourite season has always been the fall, there is something about the lush fabrics, rich colours and layered dressing that has always appealed to me. Nothing says, “Hello fall!” like a chunky knit sweater, your favourite denim jeans, and a riding boot.

All of this fall trend talk got me thinking about plus size women.  Is what you see in the “regular” marketplace translating into the plus size stores?

I went straight to the expert and spoke with Karyn Johnson. Johnson started Killer Kurves, a plus size fashion blog that acts as a resource for plus size women who are looking for a little fashion inspiration. Johnson believes in being stylish at any size, a philosophy that has always been very important to me, and the reason I fell in love with my career.

“Plus size women want to be able to wear the same styles and trends that straight size women are wearing”, says Johnson. “We were sick of things being different and not as cute from what we see in other traditional stores.”

Well look no further. The fall trends for plus size women are right on track and totally fabulous.

The leather trend is in high gear this season from full leather skirts and jackets to leather trimmed leggings. So if you are not comfortable wearing a full leather look then why not opt for a fashionable and plus size friendly alternative.  Look for a jacket with leather trim just on the sleeves, or go for a fabulous skirt with leather panels on the side.  If the hard edge of leather is a bit too much for you then mix in more feminine touches. “This seasons trends and colours are a bit difficult for me and my style. It’s all very dark. So I’ll be mixing colour, prints and details to break it all up,” says Johnson.

Peplum tops and dresses scream femininity and style and while finding the right peplum fit according to Johnson can be a bit difficult, it is a fabulous way to help achieve that hourglass figure. Watch out for peplums that hit you too high on the waist or too low. Why not pair your peplum top back to your favourite pair of jeans?

If new jeans are on your list this season well you’re in luck. Waxed, coloured, embellished or reversible, this is the season of the jean. And if you’re thinking about branching out and trying skinny jeans for the first time Johnson says, “go for it!” While there is a misconception that plus size girls can’t wear skinny jeans, really it’s about wearing what makes you feel good.

And lastly if there is one item to splurge on this season Johnson says it has to be a pair of knee high boots. This trend is new to the plus size Canadian market and a great addition to your fall wardrobe.  Whether you choose a traditional riding boot, live on the edge with some metal detail, or indulge in a wedge style boot, your coveted boots can take you from day to night. Paired with your skinny jeans, a fabulous legging and chunky knit sweater, or back to a dress and tights, you won’t regret adding this item to your fall wardrobe.

Johnson has one last piece of advice. However you decide to dress this fall season wear what makes you happy and comfortable and don’t worry about the rules. Branch out and try the trends.  Even if it’s a new chain necklace, an arm cuff, or great earrings, just remember to rock out and have fun!
