U.K. Security Council backs Cameron on Syria

Watch: UK Foreign Secretary William Hague says security council voted unanimously in favour of call to action

LONDON – Officials say Britain’s National Security Council has backed Prime Minister David Cameron’s call for action against Syria for its alleged use of chemical weapons against civilians.

Cameron’s press office said after an emergency meeting Wednesday that the military and security chiefs “unanimously” back Cameron’s call for action. The council meets weekly and is chaired by Cameron and includes Cabinet ministers, defence chiefs, and heads of intelligence agencies, depending on the subject.

The statement says the group agrees that Syrian President Bashar Assad’s regime was responsible for the lethal chemical attack last week.

The council also backs the government’s plan to introduce a U.N. Security Council resolution to condemn Syria and open the door for a possible military attack designed to prevent future attacks.

The resolution is expected to face opposition from Russia.
