Translink says number of Compass card beta testers doubled

Much of the focus in today's meeting was on preventing a similar situation from happening in the future, and a lack of communication by TransLink during the crisis to passengers. Les Bazso, Postmedia News

Translink says it has doubled the number of people who will be testing the new Compass card system after an overwhelming response.

The beta testing — which begins on September 9 — was originally planned for 5,000 volunteers but will now be expanded to 10,000.

“We are excited to see how eager our customers are to get involved and play a role in testing the new Compass system,” says Doug Kelsey, TransLink’s Chief Operating Officer.

Translink says testers were selected based on how much they used transit, and where they lived.

Feedback will be used to ensure the system is ready to go before the official launch later this year.

Beta testers will be asked to “tap in” at the start of their journey and “tap out” at the end.

The new system has come under criticism recently, with the revelation that customers who buy a ticket with cash on a bus will not be able to use their transfer to get onto the Skytrain system.

Translink said that upgrading the Compass card system to have this functionality was just too expensive.
