POINTE-CLAIRE – Reports early Tuesday morning are alleging that a Pointe-Claire company has been illegally storing electrical transformers that contain PCBs for at least 15 years.
They have apparently been ordered to dispose of them safely within the week.
According to the Journal de Montréal, Reliance Power Equipment has been collecting and recycling these transformers since 1988, supposedly without speaking to the city of Pointe-Claire or the Quebec Environment Ministry.
The information came to light last March when it was discovered that tens of thousands of liters of toxic chemicals had leaked on site.
The plant is located on Hymus Boulevard in the Pointe-Claire industrial park, not far from several schools and residential neighbourhoods.
Reliance Power Equipment now faces the possibility of severe fines for violating the Hazardous Materials Acts as well as numerous environmental laws.
So far, no charges have been filed.
