The province’s deputy chief public health officer says Manitobans will have to get used to managing COVID-19.
Dr. Jazz Atwal made the remarks Monday afternoon in a press conference with media.
“When we hit our vaccine targets, we’re still going to have COVID floating around,” he said.
“For society to kind of keep moving forward … We’re going to have to learn to deal with COVID, just like other illnesses that cause hospitalizations.”
Atwal said the province is still in the early stages of what the health care response will be come September and later, as things open up, children and teens go back to school and other respiratory diseases, such as influenza and colds, begin to circulate again.
“People are still going to get sick from COVID. Most people will have a mild illness. Most people will be vaccinated … but there are those that will have a severe outcome.”
Over the weekend, public health orders loosened restrictions around the province, allowing more people at restaurants and private properties.
Movie theatres opened, along with rules allowing casinos to open, though most didn’t due to a lack of staff.
