Smoke from the wildfires currently burning in B.C. is reaching all the way to Calgary.

The biggest fire has been burning for the past month and is in the Kootenay Region.

The fire was sparked by a lightning strike on July 25, and it now covers 500 hectares.

The effort to contain the wildfire is heavily dependent on the weather, but firefighters say luck might swing their way soon.

“In the next couple of days we’ll have a really nice chance depending on how the weather plays out, to get it stopped at one of the big avalanche paths,” said firefighter Rob Tomas. “It almost burned right adjacent to a really nice avalanche path last night so I think we’ll get a chance to get it stopped there.”

Smoke from the fires is affecting air quality in the region, including in Banff and Calgary.
