Police said the first was at a liquor store in southeast Calgary at 12:30 p.m. and the second was at a Shoppers Drug Mart in Chestermere a short time later.

In both cases, the suspects threatened staff with pepper spray, according to police.

HAWCS, or Helicopter Air Watch for Community Safety, was able to track the suspects in a stolen vehicle to the Calgary Zoo parking lot just before 2 p.m.

The Calgary Police Service said the suspects left the vehicle and tried to run from the scene, and at that point, officers deployed two Calgary police dogs.

During the arrest, one of the suspects and a woman who was not involved in the incident were bit by a police dog, according to CPS.

“The CPS canine unit handler immediately went to the aid of the bystander and waited with them while they were treated by EMS and later transported to hospital for treatment for their injuries,” police said in a news release.

Police said they are still determining if all five suspects were involved in both robberies, and charges are pending.
