WINDSOR, Ont. – An explosion and massive fire near Detroit earlier this morning has shaken buildings in Windsor and is still sending thick black smoke across the river.
The blaze broke out near the Great Lakes Steel Plant at 4425 West Jefferson in Ecorse, according to Channel 4 news in Detroit.
There are no reported injuries. It was unclear what was on fire near the plant.
Witnesses in Windsor said they started noticing the thick smoke around 9 a.m.
"What a plume of black smoke. Who knows what’s in it?"said Tom Goebel, who could see the smoke from his downtown Windsor condo. "It started off like a miniature tornado. Just a big black plume of smoke."
Shelly Lester, who works in the pro shop at Ambassador Golf Club, said she heard what sounded like an explosion. She said the fire seems to be coming right across the river from the pro shop.
"We heard an explosion, it was fairly loud," she said. "Just a lot of black smoke. Really heavy black smoke."
