Day parole extended for murderer and pedophile Harold Smeltzer

REGINA – Day parole for an infamous child-murderer and pedophile has been extended by another six months.

The National Parole Board reviewed Harold David Smeltzer’s case and granted his request to extend his day parole and continue with the conditions imposed on him – one of which bans him from places where children are bound to be, such as parks, schools and playgrounds.

The parole board stated in its written decision that Smeltzer "posed no concerns since (his) release on day parole."

In 1980, Smeltzer drowned his five-year-old Calgary neighbour in his parents’ bathtub. Her remains were found in a garbage can the following day.

He was arrested five months later after one of his rape victims, an 11-year-old girl, noticed him walking down the street.

He’s also admitted to sexually assaulting and exposing himself to 40 girls and women in Calgary between 1975 and 1980.

After serving 28 years of a life sentence, Smeltzer was paroled in Nov. 2008 and moved into the Oskana Centre, a halfway house in Regina. This prompted a public outcry.
