MacAulay claimed nearly 50 per cent of the vote to claim his 11th term in Parliament. His closest competitor, Conservative candidate Wayne Phelan, took 32 per cent and could not catch up to the longtime incumbent.

MacAulay has held this seat for a staggering 33 years. In 2014, he became the longest-serving MP in the history of Prince Edward Island.

The veteran MP previously served as the minister of veterans affairs and as associate minister of defence.

The riding of Cardigan encompasses the eastern part of Prince Edward Island. It also covers Governors Island and Boughton Island.

Prior to MacAulay’s long reign, the riding switched back and forth between the Conservatives and Liberals.
