Eleanor arrived in Calgary in mid-June, after completing a mandatory quarantine period. She was soon living with three other zebras at the Wildlife Conservation Centre south of the city, after their enclosure was damaged during the flood.

But on Thursday afternoon, Eleanor was found dead in a pasture. A post-mortem revealed that she died of a twisted gut, which is a medical condition that occurs often and unexpectedly in horse species.
