Condo owner tired of waiting for leaky roof to be repaired

EDMONTON- An Edmonton condominium owner says she’s beyond frustrated, because she’s been waiting two and a half months for her leaky roof to be repaired.

“I miss my home. I miss my daily life,” said Cara Richardson.

Richardson lives with her husband and their two-year-old daughter, in a one bedroom condo in the Crescent Place Condominium building. In mid-May, Richardson says she noticed a small leak in her bedroom ceiling and mold beginning to form.

“A few days later they cut a rectangle into the ceiling and a week later, we had three days worth of rain,” she explained. “I came home after work to a waterfall on my bed, on the carpet.”

Richardson contacted the manager of the condo board and a make-shift tent was set up to catch the leaking water. She was told the repairs would only take a few weeks, so her family moved in with friends.

“I decided that I was uprooting my daughter because I’m not sleeping in a bedroom like that.”

Another leak has since developed in the living room. Richardson says she was told the leak was due to repairs done on the patio of the penthouse suite above her unit.

Over the past two and a half months the family has lived with three sets of friends, and Richardson says she feels as though her concerns aren’t being taken seriously.

“I was calling her (the manager) at least every two or three days just to check up on the status,” she explained. “She kept saying ‘yep, we’re going to get the inspectors to come in and take a look at it. It should only be another week or so.’ And by the end of July I’d gone in to speak with her personally and she said by the time we get home from vacation, which would be August 10th, that she was confident it would be completed.”

However, when the family returned last week, Richardson says nothing had been done.

“She (the manager) didn’t really seem bothered at all because the condo president stated that our place was deemed liveable because the kitchen and the bathroom are in working order.”

The Crescent Place Board of Directors refused an interview, but released the following statement to Global News:

“If any Unit Owners want to discuss a situation involving them, they are always free to ask for a meeting with the Board to discuss their concerns or can put their concerns and requests in writing to the Board. We expect that they would do that before going to the media. The Board has been in contract (contact) with the owner today and have tentatively set up meeting with them on Monday August 19th.”

But Richardson says she’s still worried, and just wants to be able to move back home.

“We wanted to sell this place and then the leak happened. And then the repairs didn’t happened. And it’s getting overwhelming, very overwhelming.”
