Witnesses said they heard what sounded like three gunshots outside Cardero’s Restaurant off Coal Harbour Quay shortly before 9 p.m.

There were also reports of two men running from the scene, and a third on the ground.

A Global News camera spotted a handgun on the sidewalk near the victim.

Vancouver police said first responders were unable to resuscitate the victim at the scene.

“Although this shooting was targeted, we are very concerned about the potential impact on the public of an incident like this,” Const. Tania Visintin said in a media release.

“This happened in a busy spot on a nice evening and an innocent person could have gotten hurt.”

Police on Monday identified the victim as 31-year-old Harpreet Singh Dhaliwal from Abbotsford.

There was also a heavy police presence at an apartment building about three blocks away, near Broughton and Pender streets.

Visintin said police responded to a stabbing at that location that left one person in critical condition.

Police are investigating whether the two incidents could be linked, but Visintin said it was too early to connect them.

“To say they’re connected right now — we aren’t saying if they’re connected, because we don’t know if they’re connected.”

Police said no arrests have been made in what is the city’s fifth homicide of 2021.
