Man killed in northeast Calgary construction accident

A man is dead after suffering traumatic injuries at a worksite in the Calgary community of Whitehorn. As Tracy Nagai reports, a neighbour who tried to help said a concrete slab fell on a worker at a home that was being renovated. – Mar 31, 2021

One man was killed in an apparent workplace accident at a residential construction site in northeast Calgary on Wednesday.

Emergency crews were called to a home in the 0-100 Block of Whiteram Way Northeast in the community of Whitehorn just before 9 a.m. for reports that a large wall had fallen on top of someone.

Neighbour Mohamed Elmagar said he heard screaming and found the victim trapped under a slab of concrete.

“I went outside to look, the concrete (had) already fallen off on the guy – crushed him to the side of the wall. We tried to push the concrete but (it was) really heavy – we couldn’t do anything.”

EMS said the man suffered “traumatic injuries” and was pronounced dead at the scene.

The circumstances around the man’s death remain unclear but will be investigated by Occupational Health and Safety.
