No deaths but plenty of speeders on Alberta highways over long weekend

File / Global News

EDMONTON – The August long weekend thankfully did not live up to its reputation as one of the most deadliest on Alberta highways. But that doesn’t mean it was completely free of dangerous driving.

The RCMP warned they would be cracking down on motorists, and they delivered on the promise, handing out more than 4,600 tickets, over 3,300 of which were for speeding. RCMP say 79 people were charged with driving over 50 kilometres above the speed limit.

There were also 172 impaired driving charges laid.

In one suspected impaired driving incident on Saturday night, two men were shot by a Wetaskiwin RCMP officer near Ma Me O Beach after the officer pulled over their vehicle and an altercation ensued. One of the men later died.

Last year, eight people died in crashes across the province over the August long weekend.
